The writing here is beautiful and evocative, and the characters are wonderful. The cast of characters that surrounds them is colourful and complex, and everyone is just so heart-centered, it moved me to tears a few times. The details of their relationship and the way it develops as well as the love that Anne feels for both him and young Eoin is moving and so genuine. Overall, however, I really enjoyed the story of Thomas and Anne. Most of the time, that was the case here, but those detail-heavy sections slowed everything down for me. I like learning about these historical events, but I really need them integrated into the narrative. It’s written so dryly at times - which I know is the point, but it made it so that I just let my eyes glaze over until something else caught my attention again. Instead, I just went “yeah I know you told us this was coming” it was still emotionally impactful, but maybe just a bit less so than it could have been.Īlso, the details in Thomas’s journal entries lost me at a few points. I wanted it to be more vague, maybe a little cryptic, so that when things did start falling into place, I had one of those OHHHH moments that I live for. I know Eoin had to die in those first pages, because it’s what moves this story forward however, it was almost…too much? Too soon? And unfortunately, I felt like it gave a lot away for the rest of the rest of the story. I do have a couple of gripes with this one that keep it from a 5 star review though. By the last page I was a puddle underneath my weighted comfort blanket. This is my second book by her (I still think about Making Faces on at least a weekly basis) and I expected to bawl, and she didn’t let me down.
